UN MONDE MAGIQUE

This exhibit by artist Sabina Streeter, is inspired by the spirit, flamboyance, and hedonistic glamour of the iconic “La Plage” at Baie de St. Jean, Saint Barthelemy. 

Based on Streeter’s classic “Roman Photo” style, the exhibition features scenes from chance encounters and affairs accompanied by French, Italian or English subtitles. The works evolve around fictional narratives that evoke drama and intrigue within the dynamics of fear, love, and desire.

Using photographs and sketches taken during her time at “La Plage”, as well as stills from French and Italian cinema of the 1960’s, Streeter’s paintings are executed in a gestural and sophisticated style that emulates a certain “vintage glamour”.

The use of charcoal, pastel, and watercolor, which limits correcting or over laboring, underlines the sense of urgency in her work. The result is as gestural, fluid, and suggestive as the beaches and characters themselves.
