EQUUS / ICON AND CRUELTY

This collection of paintings by Sabina Streeter explores images of horses in mythic, natural, social, and cultural contexts.

Horses are shown as larger than life iconic creatures who have been heroic and victorious since ancient times, but are all too often victimized by abuse, neglect, and slaughter for financial gain in contemporary society.

Streeter refers to the legendary female equestrians like Marie Antoinette of France,  Empress Elizabeth ("Sisi") of Austria, and Lola Montez, the international spy and aventuress, and evokes the haunting images by Johann Heinrich Fussi entitled "Nightmares".
